2006 Alternative Education Winter Summits

2006 Winter Summit Program

 

The Ohio Alternative Education Advisory Council presented the 2006 Alternative Education Winter Summits. Program recipients funded through the Alternative Education Challenge Grant Program were required to attend at least one of the two regional summits being offered. Grant recipients were not restricted to any one particular location or training track. All attendees could use a portion of their funding to attend the mandated event.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS:

STATE INSTITUTE FOR READING INSTRUCTION (SIRI)

SIRI is a state-sponsored professional development opportunity for Ohio teachers that encourages a statewide "shared conversation" around reading development and provides teachers with foundational knowledge and strategies that are research-based. The Adolescent Literacy component of SIRI provides middle school and high school teachers with research based instructional strategies for teaching content area reading. This overview provided an introduction to the Adolescent Literacy component and professional development opportunities offered through SIRI.

FOSTORIA CITY SCHOOLS AND SIRI ADOLESCENT LITERACY

This session provided the opportunity for participants to learn how Fostoria City Schools has implemented SIRI training in its new freshman learning community.

BUILDING RESILIENCY: A YOUTH'S PERSPECTIVE

This presentation shared the group's definition of resiliency, as well as personal stories of resilience from a youth perspective. ODMH has convened a workgroup of youth and family members to assist in the development of a resiliency-based mental health system for Ohio's children. The workgroup has maintained a strong youth and parent voice throughout the process with a particular focus on promoting the youth's vision of resiliency.

WHAT TO EXPECT: STUDENTS IN THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM

This session provided a brief overview of Ohio's Juvenile Justice System. The session also explored techniques and expectations for students transitioning from the Ohio Department of Youth Services back to the community and classroom. Learn how to contact and work effectively with Parole Officers and obtain transcripts and other documents. Information on Juvenile Sex Offender Registration will also be presented.

GANG ACTIVITY IN OHIO

This session provided an overview of current trends of gang activity in Ohio. Learn about gang activity and how to identify gang members. Topics will include gang identification, gang activity, gang signs, and symbols. Information on gang structure, organization and rules was be provided. Tips and techniques on keeping your classroom and school safe was also be provided.
