The Alternative Education Challenge Grant Program
is designed for students who are at risk of school failure and other
related problems. The program is funded by state general revenue funds
and a minimum match of 40 percent local funds. During the first four
years of operation, the Challenge Grant Program
served more than 140,000 students.
Of the nearly 25,000 students enrolled in
alternative education programs in the 2003-2004 school year,
approximately 39 percent (9,500) were from the 21 urban school districts
in the state and the remaining 61 percent of the students were from
suburban and rural districts.
Currently, more than 500 Ohio school districts
have students participating in an alternative education program. About
75 percent (18,750) of the participating students were in grades 7-12.
The remaining 25 percent (6,250) were in grades K-6 and received
programs designed to promote positive school behavior and prevent
problem behaviors.
