Children’s Hospital Behavioral Health Services (CHBHS)
aims to
deliver flexible, community-based mental health services to children,
adolescents, and families. Consistent with this mission, particular efforts are
directed to the development and delivery of school-based mental health
services. Planning and development of programs is sometimes undertaken by
program staff working alone and sometimes through partnerships with other
agencies. For example, CHBHS staff has long provided school-based mental health
services to pupils attending the Clearbrook School, an SBH-specific program
operated by the Columbus Public Schools. The program’s partnership efforts
include the successful Care Connection Project, a collaborative consisting of
CHBHS, the Columbus Public Schools, North Central Mental Health Services, and
St. Vincent’s Family Centers. The program was determined to have been
successful in reducing disciplinary incidents in targeted schools during the
1999-2000 school year. Reading skills and mathematics skills also improved for
the children receiving services. Working relationships have also been
established with suburban districts in communities surrounding Columbus.
