Northeast Ohio Region
Positive Education Program
Cleveland, Ohio
The Positive Education Program (PEP)
in Cleveland, Ohio has provided services to troubled
children and adolescents, their families, and public
schools for over thirty years. The goal of PEP is to reduce the
discordance, enhance the strengths, and build the skills of children
and their families - empowering them to function as independently as
possible and to avoid destructive outcomes which limit their
potential.
PEP’s evidence-based and nationally recognized approaches are
adapted from Project Re-EDucation, developed by Nicholas Hobbs,
which is an ecological model for high-risk youth designed to improve
self-esteem, control impulsiveness, and increase internal control.
PEP ASSIST, established in 1997, is a
new service option offered by PEP. The mission of PEP ASSIST is to
provide training and consultation to public school programs so that
children with severe and challenging behaviors may be served more
readily in their district of residence. A variety of services
designed to meet the needs of different settings are available.
Among the most requested services include consultation for
individual children, behavioral assessments, onsite workshops,
inservice training, and structured visitations.
The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education
recognized the program’s efforts in 1995 as one of six national
models. In 2000, the U.S. Department of Justice and Education
saluted their contribution in the publication Safeguarding Our
Children: An Action Guide. PEP was also featured in an 1995
PBS documentary entitled Crisis of Care, produced with
funding from the Robert Wood Foundation.
